Did you get this all squared away? What FireWire drive were you using that was going to sleep? I use a number of LaCie d2 quad interface drives with FireWire 800 and they never go to sleep by themselves...
That turned into quite a saga. The WD 1 TB MyBook Pro is to be avoided at all costs. After 2 replacements and lots of hair pulling, they shipped a 2 TB unit out, which has been a solid performer. I think this was actually the root cause of the troubles. That said, the Mac Mini shows stutter over both Firewire and USB to external drives (WD, Toshiba and Buffalo(Samsung)) - not something that I have really diagnosed yet.
I'm still cautiously evaluating the WD drives and so far the replacements of the replacements of the replacements are working as they should. I will not give them a blanket recommendation yet, though.
