OSX 64bit versions of db&w Tools and exrTrader
« on: November 14, 2009, 05:16:17 PM »

Dear Michael Wolf,

I'm sure you're thinking about that and this post is not meant to set pressure on you - it's just an inquiry:
since the first OB builds of LW UB 64x are out, I'm hoping for a short statement (here or maybe in the NewTek OB Mac forum) about your plans to publish your LW plug-ins as 64-bit versions?
Can't imagine if it's "just" a re-compile or more of a re-write (in cocoa) which is necessary, so any infos would be very appreciated.

Falling back to LW's default toolset makes the 64-bit version (for me) a toothless tiger as I'm unable to linearize LDR imagery and colors without your db&w Tools (nodal, without using the image editor+gamma), unable to export .exr multi-layer files and most of my materials are set up with your and Denis Pontonnier's additional nodes.

Thank you for all your work, cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,
I've actually made some test compiles of the tools for a start. All of our plugins use a few OS calls, so there is some work required in moving from Carbon to Cocoa. Currently the compiles work, but they are extremely unstable for one reason or another.
The tools are a nice test bed for it, as they rely on no other third party code.
exrTrader is a different beast as it requires the OpenEXR library, and I'm still trying to suss out a way to properly compile a 4-way UB: 32-bit PPC/Intel requiring at least OS X 10.4 and 64-bit PCC/Intel requiring at least 10.5 or higher. I still haven found out a way to do it (after spending way too much time researching it and trying different approaches) - in the end it may well mean that all plugins will require at least OS X 10.5, including the 32-bit ones.

Cheers,
Mike

Hello Michael,

Thanks a lot for your reply, it's very encouraging to read that you have already started to work on them! That's good news.
At least, Leopard as minimum requirement wouldn't bother me, but that's only for me.
(Unfortunately the response for your poll was quite weak)

Thanks again!
cheers, Roger

Yes, that was actually the reasoning behind it.
I've actually found one or two pointers recently that could help... I just need to courage to try them out Wink

Cheers,
Mike

This may sound newbie (as I am to all this EXR stuff), but does the current exrTrader work in Mac UB, just 32-bit at least? I did not see it listed as such on the product page...

Thanks,
deg

Yes, of course. UB 32bit and the old CFM.

You can at any time register (create an account on the website) and download it. You'll only get to use the normal image loader/saver without a license though... but you can check if it works or not (and it does Wink ).

Cheers,
Mike
