is exrTrader usable for DFX+ users?
« on: May 11, 2007, 10:25:29 AM »

Hi,

I´m aware that DFX+ 4.04e will only support 8 bits per channel, and that is the reason i´m asking, as i am very interested in exrTrader mainly for it´s buffer exporting capabilities.

Leaving aside the 32bits per channel thing ( :'( ) will still be usable for me for these kind of things (buffers, passes)?
Will the buffers be heavily clipped (and unusable) on DFX+ importing?
Is there something in Lightwave rendering options i can do to avoid this, like using a linear file format for exporting, like TGA?

Would it be possible to have on your website a sample exr file with all buffers included just for testing purposes?

thanks
Juan Carlos

Hi Juan Carlos,

I think for DFX+ you may just as well use the buffer exports included with LightWave.
exrTrader does not export any additional buffers, but mainly provides openEXR export (and makes choosing buffers easier due to the VIPER support).
If your application does not support float data (and DFX+ doesn't as you know) there is no real advantage.

Still, I've attached a sample openEXR file containing all buffers for you to check out (This is the teaset.lws shipping with LW 8.0).

Cheers,
Mike

P.S. Thanks a lot for the idea of posting sample images, we'll do that in addition to the attached image.

Many thanks Mike

I´ve tried the sample teaset.exr and DFX+ won´t even load it, so i´m out of luck in this case.

If you consider writing a passes/buffers manager for Lightwave with the features of exrTrader, but having the chance to choose a different file format for saving, i´ll be the first to buy it (hint, hint...  Grin )

thanks anyway

Hi Juan Carlos,

I might be due to the compression setting I used. However, the openEXR library used with DFX+ is quite old and has some issues with more modern files.

Actually, I have been thinking about passes/layers for some time Cheesy

Cheers,
Mike
